A birthday

Happy birthday to me! Can’t believe I’m 21 already. Again. They say the older you get, the faster the perception of time goes for you. So the next 20 years will go by faster than the 20 years before. That’s a nice depressing thought to start the day.

To be honest this is a pretty regular day for me. I have a strange relationship with my birthdays. Growing up I always wanted my birthdays to be huge events. Days all about me. I admit it was a selfish approach. When I was a kid I had several parties/get togethers so can’t really complain. Same for milestone birthdays. But every other birthday has been a bit ordinary. What it led to is disappointment after disappointment where I simply had unrealistic expectations. I’m sure Mrs OddFather would attest to this not making things easier on her!

My approach the last few years has been to quietly let my birthday come and go. But at the end of the day I always wish I had put more effort into organising something and calling people over to celebrate. It’s not about presents – I just tend to get my energy from the company of other people at times, so it perks me up.

This year I have the rainbow birthday cake with unicorns I really wanted – as decided by the OddDaughter – and lovely pink candles to blow out – as decided by the OddDaughter – and as a present, a new bed almost ready* for the OddDaughter – as decided by the OddDaughter.

I can have no complaints. The OddDaughter is the best present I have ever received in my life. And soon I will get another amazing present in the OddBaby. Makes it a cheap birthday for Mrs OddFather I guess. I’m sure she’ll agree the pain and discomfort she has to go through for childbirth is enough!

For now, I’m going to get out of bed and go for a birthday run in this lovely welcoming storm. Today may be the oldest we have ever been, but it’s also the youngest we’ll ever be again. So, make the most of it.

I’m all cliched out. Enjoy your days!

*I did stay up late to build the majority of the bed last night – but one of the boxes the company sent was in the wrong size so I have a bed frame with no slats for the mattress to sit on. So close, yet so far! Arghhhhhh.
