Making time

Does anyone else struggle with time? It’s something I’m really struggling with right now. My typical day recently looks something like this:

  • 7.30ish – Wake up realising I’m late and don’t have time to complete many tasks in the morning.
  • Get ready – often trying to help the OddDaughter get ready too. Oh and put the washing machine on – preferably remembering to put the clothes in there too.
  • 8am – Work. This involves a lot of extra tasks that I’m not going to bother outlining.
  • Lunchtime – make myself lunch, buy ingredients for dinner. Sometimes, like today, write this blog if I didn’t have time in the morning. Oh and remember to empty the washing machine to hang the clothes out to dry.
  • Some time between 5pm and 6pm – Realise I need to get dinner ready before the wife and daughter return back from work and nursery.
  • 6.15ish – Serve dinner. Often I’ll be waiting around for them to return home.
  • Between 6.15-7pm. Shove dinner down my throat, wash the dishes, and serve the OddDaughter fruit for dessert.
  • 7-7.30pm – Do whatever it takes to get the OddDaughter into the bath. Usually making some sort of deal with the devil.
  • 7.30ish – put the OddDaughter to sleep – fall asleep myself during the process.
  • Wake up around an hour or so later and panic I have less time for down time (sleep not included). Let alone the millions of errands that still need to be done – painting, vacuuming, mopping etc etc. Spend the next hour or so stressing about all the things that need to be done.
  • 10.30-11.30 – Try and get off the couch to start what seems like the long journey to bed. Instead waste an hour, or more, watching clips of 90s wrestling on Instagram. Including googling where they are today. Turns out a lot of them are dead. What a pleasant thought before going to sleep.
  • 11.30-1ish – Lay in bed struggling to go to sleep while I try to settle all the thoughts running through my head.
  • Repeat.

No time to run, no time to meditate, no time to read, no time to look at what day of the week it is. And the list of “jobs to be done” only gets longer and longer. I then become overwhelmed with the sheer number of things I need to get done, and that leads to me getting ZERO jobs done. For anyone that gets their knickers in a twist that I don’t have time for you – tough shit. Find a way to clone me and I’ll listen.

Is anyone old enough to remember the programme Bernard’s Watch in the UK? I loved the concept of stopping time – spending far too long thinking about what I would do with such power. It was wasted on Bernard. The kid actually left money for things he took whilst time was frozen. Companies don’t care – they have insurance! Yep – too much time thinking about that show.

It’s a good job our routine isn’t about to be thrown into chaos in the coming mon… oh… fiddlesticks.

To be honest, maybe the newborn baby will be good for routine. Going back to the drawing board and prioritising what matters most. I can feel the smiles from all parents with two or more kids.

Luckily, I have a week off coming soon where I can reset a bit – finishing off any outstanding tasks. Taking bets on how little I accomplish…
