Good morning. That’s right. It’s morning. Not morning as in early hours of the morning before we go to sleep. Proper morning. Morning morning. I woke up at 5.30am. The OddDaughter wanted me to go into her room to sing her a song. However, I’ve limited her to being sung to over the monitor all night (only twice). So, winning right? I tried going back to sleep for half hour, then at 6am I went on my phone and started watching wrestling reels for about 20 minutes before I realised I may as well get up and start the ideal morning routine I’ve been avoiding for the last few months (years).
Ideally, I wake up at 5am and make the most of the morning. I’m definitely more productive in the mornings. However, it doesn’t help when I go to sleep around midnight – usually because I get distracted by something silly. Last night was a mixture of watching Dragonball Z clips, and then deciding to read up on Tekken lore. And trust me, there’s A LOT of Tekken lore so that took longer than it should have.
So, 6.30am and I decide to make my way out of my room. Which involved having to quietly open a sticking door, knowing where each of the loose floorboards are, and then tip toe-ing to the safety of the kitchen. Also – have you ever tried brushing your teeth quietly with an electric toothbrush?
It’s funny how things go full circle. I remember being young, coming back late at night and needing to tip toe, avoiding loose floorboards to get to my bedroom without waking my parents up. Now I’m doing the same thing to avoid waking my daughter up. I guess it’s useful not being drunk – though you don’t quite get that false sense of confidence to use to your advantage.
I remember this one time when I was very young, I got back home at like 6am. I opened the front door slowly and walked in, only to hear my mum in the kitchen, who then heard me. I panicked a bit, wondering what to use as an excuse for being out for so long. Then she said: “Wow, you’re up early”. To which I replied “riiight”.
That was a tiring day man.
It’s still dark outside, but I can start to hear the birds, I quite enjoy the serenity of the morning. An ideal morning would involve starting with a full glass of water – I hear that’s good for you rather than starting on a coffee. Then, to journal in the form of this blog – which is to ramble. And that then gives me time to meditate, and do a bit of focussed work on certain goals you may hear about in future. All before starting work. Luckily I went for a run yesterday so today is a rest day.
Though, in actuality I’ll probably get to meditating and then the OddDaughter will wake up so I ought to get her ready to give Mrs OddFather an extra 10 minutes in bed.
Am I silly to be attempting an early morning routine when there’s a newborn baby headed our way in a matter of weeks? Should I not be focussed on getting as much sleep as possible now whilst I have the time? I guess I’ll feedback in a couple of months – coming back to this article and envying this lucky bastard who once had time on his hands.
