A day off that isn’t

Phew. What a day “off” work. Mrs OddFather’s keeping-in-touch days with work are every Thursday – which means I’m using my annual leave to spend quality time with the OddSon.

”Quality” isn’t quite the right term to describe today. You see, today was the first day I had to solely get the OddDaughter to school and get both kids ready, breakfast-fed, and do the drop off. It started well enough. Mrs Oddfather got the OddSon ready for me so I could start the day with a 2 minute shower. That, my non-parent readers, is the most luxurious way for a parent of a young family to start the day.

Determined to give the kids a healthy breakfast, I got the OddDaughter ready and made banana porridge. Usually goes down a treat with the kids. Today, The OddSon wasn’t having any of it. Quite literally. Under normal circumstances this wouldn’t be a problem as I would make something else fresh after the school drop off. But, I had to take the car for an MOT shortly afterwards so I gave him Weetabix instead. Went down a treat.

I then hurried to the MOT, expecting a straight pass for the car. But it failed because the tyres on the car were basically non-existent. I mean – it wasn’t obvious to me.

My plan for the day was now under threat. I was supposed to meet Mrs OddFather for lunch so she could give the OddSon a feed. Managed to still make this happen, but next to a different garage that changed tyres. Mrs OddFather went back to work, leaving the OddSon and I to wait for the tyre guy(s) to finish, having themselves run late.

This then gave me only 20 mins to see my nan for her 90th birthday before I had to pick up the OddDaughter from school.

Then return to the first garage to get the MOT passed.

Ooop – the OddSon has just woken up crying.

Back.

Not gonna lie – I’ve lost the point of this whole post. I guess there was no point to begin with. Maybe I’m just acknowledging that today was a more difficult day than I hoped. This year in general has started as a bit of a struggle to be honest. Hopefully picks up.

Yikes. Maybe doing daily blogs is a bit too much. Feel like I’m not really saying a whole lot.

BUT THEN… My 16 year old niece (the OddNiece, if you will) snapchatted me to say she’s enjoying the blog. So, for her I will continue! Is it “snapchatted”? Or should it be “snapped”? Or should I act my age and revert to saying “contacted”. Nope, too late for that – I can be hip with the kids.

Seriously, I’m on a streak of over a hundred snaps – which for the people acting my real age, means I’ve sent a different “snap” for more than 100 consecutive days to both the OddNiece, and her brother – the OddNephewOne. There is also an OddNephewTwo on my sister’s side. Got to make sure I build the OddLore with the appropriate level of detail!

But yeah – snapchat is one of the least user-friendly apps I have used. However, if that’s the only way I can stay relevant with the kids in the family, then so be it!

It’s 9.30pm. I’m tired. And luckily tomorrow is a working day, which these days feels like what a day off should feel like! Tara.
