Mutant animals experience moral dilemma after fly attempts to destroy humanity
Hello everybody! It’s National Cinema Day – a day I did not know existed. I sent Mrs. OddFather and the OddDaughter away for the weekend so I could get some painting done around the house. It’s a good job she doesn’t read this blog as I decided to watch back-to-back movies in the cinema instead! What Mrs OddFather doesn’t know… won’t something something something.
The two films I decided to watch were Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem and Blue Beetle. Only, Blue Beetle was sold out. Turns out these cinema days are more popular than I realised. And why not at only £3 per ticket? So, in place of Blue Beetle I decided to give in to my urges and watch Barbie as the second movie.
Without further ado, here are the quick, shorter reviews for each movie, starting with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem.
Immediately the animation stood out as a huge positive. Very similar to the Spider-Verse animated movies. I love Pixar and the polished look of their animation, but everyone is doing it the same, so when a studio tries something new, it usually gets my attention!
The music was also on point for this movie. Initially, I thought setting a Turtles movie in the 80s would be an awesome concept, given the peak of turtle-mania back in that era. I mean, I loved those cartoons, and the movie I remember was the first VHS I ever owned, receiving it from my uncle on my 6th birthday. It also came with some sort of pizza voucher that introduced me to pepperoni. Mmmm… I love pepperoni. It’s almost midnight at the time of writing this, that’s not too late to order a pizza, is it?
So yeah, I was looking forward to this movie given the positive reviews and the step away from the more recent Turtles movies. I actually wanted to take the OddDaughter to watch this movie. However, Mrs. OddFather made clear that the movie would be too violent for a 3 (almost 4) year old, so I had to listen to her. I’m noticing a pattern here…
The movie was great though, absolutely hilarious, not too cheesy, and it brought back characters from the cartoon that hadn’t really worked since.
There was a slight change in dynamic in the turtle personalities. Leo is still the leader. Raph is still rageful but with less attitude and sarcasm. Donny is more like the youngest with his squeaky voice, but still a geek. But the turtle that surprised me most was Michelangelo. I remember him as the funny one, but here he seemed less defined than previous iterations and I found that a little sad. I mean he wasn’t really my favourite – that was always Raphael. But even then, that was due to his attitude and sarcasm, which as mentioned is no longer present. I guess they work better as a unit than they did before.
Don’t let that fool you though. I loved this movie!
Verdict
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem is fantastic. It had me laughing several times throughout. The voice acting is also great. And I’m genuinely looking forward to what comes next.
