Harry Potter and the Cursed Child review

Hello hello. It’s me again. Don’t know why I expect you to be surprised – who else is going to turn up?

Anywho – this was the post I was supposed to write yesterday. Or the day before on the way back from watching Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.

It was most likely the last time Mrs OddFather and I would have a date night/afternoon/morning for a while before baby comes along. We should still have a few weeks before baby is here, but already Mrs OddFather is struggling with carrying the baby. Apparently the baby thinks they’re Captain America, and Mrs OddFather’s organs are the bad guys that deserve the shit kicked out of them. I really feel for women there – I struggle after eating a huge kebab, let alone months of carrying a kebab that’s growing by the day. Did I really just compare our baby to a kebab? Come on – if you knew me, you’d know that’s the ultimate compliment I can pay my kids. I love kebabs.

I digress. Again! I will get round to talking about the play…

As mentioned Mrs OddFather is starting to feel uncomfortable. Sitting through two parts of a play was probably a bit much for her. Didn’t help we had two fairly huge guys sitting in front of us. I’m not exactly short – but even I struggled to see past them. Didn’t also help that one of the guys was a sassy lil bitch. He made a snarky comment to Mrs OddFather about her making noise drinking. Was honestly a joy seeing Mrs OddFather say “Excuse me?” to him in a tone I know only too well. Don’t worry, I was waiting to jump in as the brave husband.

Honestly, I was.

I have to admit – I wasn’t overly excited about going to this show. I was a big fan of the books, having read them all – usually on the day or so after they were released. The movies I watched at my own leisure, never really in a hurry to watch them. And that Fantastic Beasts movie series I haven’t bothered with whatsoever. In fact, I wanted to go watch the Back to the Future musical instead. Is it a musical? I don’t know. Whatever it is I wanted to go there.

That said – Harry Potter and the Cursed Child was fantastic. I’m not going to dive into spoiler territory or anything. During the first scene I did think there was a lot of overacting. Then I remembered this is a play, not a movie, so the acting required was different.

What really stood out is the practical effects. Honestly it had me wondering how they did certain things. It was like I was in a magic show.

My favourite thing was the Dementors. I would honestly watch the play again just to see them. Truly fantastic. And scary. Also, there was plenty of humour. Some we’re accustomed to from Ron Weasley, others from newer characters I won’t go into.

As there’s two parts, it certainly makes you feel like you’re getting your moneys worth. And I quite enjoyed it feeling like a whole day out. Not sure how that feels when pregnant, but Mrs OddFather seemed to enjoy it nonetheless. The plot of the play has elements of time travel. Which I love. Turns out I got to see Back to the Future after all.

So do I recommend this play? Absolutely yes. And a big thanks to Mrs OddFather’s Aussie mates for gifting this to us.
